Seasonal Traditions

shrove-tues-fire

The seasons of the Church year give shape and rhythm to our life together.

In addition to Sunday worship, St. Timothy’s marks holy days and celebrations with services and traditions that reflect our community’s creativity, joy, and ancient roots. Some are centuries old; others are uniquely “St. Tim’s”—homegrown, participatory, and full of life.

Holy Week for young people

Lent & Holy Week

Shrove Tuesday

We gather for breakfast-for-dinner, bury the “Alleluia” banner, and burn last year’s palms to prepare ashes for Ash Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday

A quiet, contemplative service marking our mortality, our belovedness, and the beginning of Lent.

Holy Week

Maundy Thursday — We hear the story of the Last Supper and wash one another’s feet.

Good Friday — We hear the Passion interwoven with Gospel and Blues, pray for the world, and venerate the cross.

Holy Week for Young People

A sensory storytelling of the week’s events through Godly Play, crafted especially for children and families.

The Great Vigil of Easter

A beloved St. Tim’s tradition: beginning at sunset with new fire, scripture, and song; processing around the church calling on saints across time; and proclaiming the Resurrection with joy.

Easter Morning

A glorious celebration of new life—digging up the Alleluia banner, renewing our vows, hunting for eggs, and feasting together.

Seasonal Celebrations Throughout the Year

Pentecost

We wear red, celebrate the Spirit among us, and often end with a potluck and bounce house.

Ascension Hike

A hike at Rancho San Antonio with Eucharist and a picnic at the top.

Blessing of the Bicycles

Bikes, scooters, strollers, wheelchairs—anything with wheels—is blessed, followed by a neighborhood ride.

Summer Camp

A week of songs, stories, tie-dye, crafts, food, and joyful chaos for PreK–5th grade, with teens serving as counselors.

Blessing of the Backpacks

We bless students and teachers, and gather needed supplies for Santa Maria Urban Ministry.

Feast of St. Francis: Blessing of the Animals

Dogs, fish, birds, and the occasional tortoise gather in the courtyard for this outdoor service honoring all God’s creatures.

Compassion Week

In collaboration with Mountain View and Los Altos, we host service opportunities that connect people with needs in our wider community.

Feast of All Saints

We honor those we love and see no longer at our Altar of Remembrance, celebrate pledge commitments, invite children to bring a “candy tithe,” and enjoy a chili cookoff or fruit-forward potluck.
