Rogare comes from the Latin to ask. Since the 400s, people have observed the Sixth Sunday of Easter as Rogation Sunday, asking for God’s blessing on fields and crops.
Recognizing how fundamentally we rely on God for provision, farmers asked for mercy and abundance at this start of the growing season. Over time, it became a tradition to ask for God’s protection of all industry, work, growth, and life in the community.
This Sunday (May 10th), we will bless our grounds, asking for God’s providence to sustain our gardens and all of our labor in the world.
The Collect for Rogation Days
Almighty God, Lord of heaven and earth;
We beseech thee to pour forth thy blessing upon this land,
and to give us a fruitful season; that we, constantly receiving thy bounty,
may evermore give thanks unto thee in thy holy Church;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
